Athena, who was the virgin goddess of wisdom, is associated with the bird, which become the symbol of knowledge and wisdom. Owls were reproduced in vases, but mainly they decorated the obverse of the Athenian tetradrachms, after 510 BC. These coins were known as glaux (little owl).
